This is a quickie just to share my latest for the NYT: a story in today’s paper on Gayli, a series of queer Irish dance classes hosted by Brooklyn Irish Dance Company at Mary’s Bar, a queer Irish pub in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Here’s a gift link:
Gayli is an affectionate play on the word céilí, which refers both to a social gathering with dance and music, and the kind of dances done at such a gathering (also done in the context of Irish dancing competitions). I had so much fun reconnecting with céilí dancing in my reporting for this piece and, thanks to Nic Gareiss, learning a bit more about céilí history. The next two Gaylis are March 18 and 25. I plan to be there on the 25th for the first Gayli Gala, a benefit for trans Irish dancers. Maybe I’ll see you there?
I also wanted to share, a bit belatedly, the NYT spring arts preview (that’s also a gift link), which includes two recommendations from me: Behind the Groove, a dance party with performances in the rotunda of the Guggenheim Museum, coming up tomorrow, March 18; and Trisha Brown Dance Company at the Joyce, March 26-31.
Speaking of things to see, another Dance List will be coming your way this week. Stay tuned!
