Greetings from the thick of the fall dance season — and election season. Do you have a plan to vote? It’s a busy time on many fronts, and I keep getting an alert that this post is approaching “too long for email,” so I’m going to dive right in.
A few notes for navigating this list:
The events are listed in order of opening date. Where listed as “through” a certain date, the event has already opened.
The list has two main sections: performances (week by week) followed by a roundup of dance-related screenings, talks, and exhibitions.
* = free event (note: this no longer indicates sliding-scale or suggested donation events, just free ones!)
The information below is current as of the last time I checked, but things can change, and while I strive for accuracy, I will inevitably make a few mistakes. Please visit the event websites for up-to-date details and full date/time info.
When I have work/news of my own to share, you can find it at the end under p.s.
Want to let me know about an upcoming show? Reply to this email or write to me at danceletter@substack.com. (To keep the workload of this project manageable, I tend not to list student recitals or showcases, as much as I appreciate them!)
As always, if you’d like to help sustain this project, two great ways to do so are to share Danceletter with friends and/or sign up for a paid subscription. (A special rate for artists, freelancers, and students is available here.) Thank you for your support.
Dance List Highlight: Rainer x2
As you browse this month’s list, you might notice that Yvonne Rainer, who turns 90 in November, has not one but two live events coming up this week. The first is at Judson Memorial Church, Oct. 29-30, where she’ll perform what she’s calling the final version of Trio A, bringing the iconic dance back to the site of its 1966 premiere, home to so much of her early work as a founding member of Judson Dance Theater. The program also includes a screening of her 2002 film After Many a Summer Dies the Swan: Hybrid and a new work, Rainer Dreams, with choreography by Emily Coates, Irene Hultman, and Emmanuèle Phuon. Then, on Nov. 3, the laid-back series Sundays on Broadway, curated this season by Cathy Weis and Malcolm-x Betts, hosts a screening of Rainer’s 1980 feature-length film Journeys from Berlin/1971 at Weis’s SoHo loft, followed by a conversation with the artist. Links to more info below. [Note: Both of these events were postponed; the evening at Judson Church has been rescheduled for Thursday, Nov. 21.]

For the NYT, I reviewed D.D. Dorvillier’s Dance is the archeologist, or an idol in the bone. at the Chocolate Factory. And last week, I had the pleasure of joining Charli Brissey’s Research in Action class in the University of Michigan’s MFA dance program (via Zoom). Many thanks to Charli for the invitation and the students for their questions and insights.
