I often add to Dance List as I learn of new events. To submit an addition or correction, write to me at danceletter@substack.com.
As I round the corner into the second year of Dance List, I’m excited to share that Danceletter has a new look! It was one of my goals for the first year of this project to give the website a little glow-up, and I’m so happy to have realized that with the help of the talented folks at FAILSPACE, who dreamed up these new designs:
I came to designers Ampersand and Angel with not a whole lot of clarity about what I was looking for, and they graciously transformed my smattering of ideas into a few distinct visual directions to choose from. We eventually narrowed in on something inspired by vintage New York City signage (reflecting the NYC focus of Dance List), combined with the personal touch of a handwritten signature. Deep thanks to the whole FAILSPACE team — Ampersand, Angel, and Paige — for their creativity, flexibility, and kindness through the process. Hire them for your next design project!
If you’d like to help keep Dance List going for another year, consider signing up for a paid subscription. Paying subscribers get access to Danceletter Convos, a monthly series in which I chat with artists and others in the dance / performance worlds whose work inspires me. (The October interview is, I think, going to be especially fun.) This once-a-month post also includes my must-see recommendations for the weeks ahead.
A discount for artists, freelancers, and students is available here.
This month’s list covers Sept. 30 through Oct. 27. As always, I often add to Dance List as I learn of new events; the latest is below.
A few notes for navigating the list:
The events are listed in order of opening date. Where listed as “through” a certain date, the event has already opened.
The list has two main sections: performances (week by week) followed by a roundup of dance-related screenings, talks, and exhibitions.
* = free, suggested donation, or sliding-scale ticket options
The information below is current as of the last time I checked, but things can change, and while I strive for accuracy, I will inevitably make a few mistakes. Please visit the event websites for up-to-date details and full date/time info.
Want to let me know about an upcoming show? Reply to this email or write to me at danceletter@substack.com. (To keep the workload of this project manageable, I tend not to list student recitals or showcases, as much as I appreciate them!)
October Highlight
I’m trying out a new, possibly recurring feature this month, highlighting an event or two from the list that I recommend.
It happens that two major dance exhibitions have just opened, both on view through early next year: Edges of Ailey at the Whitney, curated by Adrienne Edwards; and The Joffrey + Ballet in the U.S. at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, curated by Julia Foulkes with Nicole Duffy. They’re both the kind of show where even after an hour of browsing, you still feel you’ve only scratched the surface; I’ll be returning to both. Here are some snapshots (by me) of Ailey posters and Joffrey photos:
